The Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre is located in the heart of Chippenham’s busy Market Place. Here you’ll discover all you could ever want to know about local history dating right back as far as pre-historic times.
The delightful village of Lacock is an absolute must whilst in the area. It is the site of many a famous film and television period drama such as Pride and Prejudice and Emma, with the majority of the houses dating back to medieval times. The area is owned by the National Trust and as such is particularly well preserved, giving you the feeling that you are really stepping back in time.
An attraction within Lacock itself is Lacock Abbey and Fox Talbot Museum of Photography. The abbey was founded in 1229 and was later home to William Fox Talbot, the so-called father of photography. Therefore photographic enthusiasts in particular will find plenty of interesting displays on offer to occupy their time.
For a wealth of colourful blooms take a tour out to see the Sheldon Manor Gardens. Most famous for its roses, the best time of year to visit is during the months of May and June, but throughout the summer you’ll find plenty of colour around both the formal and informal gardens.
Another place that those of you with a love of the great outdoors will appreciate is Lackham Country Park, in the grounds of the stunning 18th century Wiltshire College. You’ll also find the Lackham Museum of Agricultural and Rural Life outlining the area’s history.
